Streamlining scrap metal recycling with the Hitachi ZX50U-3

Specialising in industrial and commercial scrap metal recycling, Recycal is a family owned business offering a competitive and unique recycling service in Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.

Recycal commenced operations in August 2010 and focuses on the provision of solutions to streamline scrap metal recycling through to large clean-ups and services to door trade customers.

A Hitachi ZX50U-3 mini excavator fitted with an Embrey HD40 rake grapple is undertaking material handling activities across Recycal scrap yards in Victoria. When combining the ZX50U-3 with the Embrey attachment, the excavator has proven the most versatile and efficient method of loading baling presses—specifically the movement of stock into the hopper.

“We have been pleasantly surprised with the abilities of the five tonne unit and it has certainly surpassed our expectations in terms of its ease of operation and ability to move stock efficiently,” explained Commercial Manager, Troy Rowe. “We have never used anything under a ten tonne unit in previous metal recycling businesses, so to see the unit doing essentially 80–85% of what a ten tonne unit used to do is quite unexpected.” The company has ordered a new Hitachi ZX210H-3B for their Eagle Farm site in Queensland and a similar unit for their Rowville site.

In addition to other recently opened sites in Queensland and Victoria, Recycal is currently in the process of constructing a premier yard based in Rowville, Victoria, which will feature industry best practice technology and processes. This site has been designed to ensure top efficiency with large concrete holding bays, a truck wash using recycled water, triple interceptor and stormceptor pits (wastewater treatment system), B-Double weighbridge, and a state-of-the-art HD video monitoring system covering the facility.

“Overall, I would have to say the experience with Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia has been highly positive,” said Troy. “The support we have received from Hitachi’s in-house finance company, Marubeni Equipment Finance, has really cemented a successful relationship. Being in the recycling industry, our family have dealt with various equipment finance companies, and Marubeni have made the process streamlined and smooth allowing us to focus our attention on business operations,” explained Troy.
