One of the safest and most reliable rail machines on the market.

Harrybilt Engineering noticed the requirement for a rail machine that could withstand extremely severe working conditions whist also being safe, versatile, efficient and simple to operate. The team are not new to this type of innovative product design either, they specialise in the design and fabrication of advanced equipment for rail, transport and general commercial applications.

Established in 1985, the family owned business have become a supplier of choice throughout Australia for road rail trucks, excavators and trailers. With recent developments in their fabrication, machining, hydraulics and painting capabilities, they are more ready and capable than ever to take on new challenges, with the current challenge being the new S-Series rail machine.

“The partnership that Harrybilt has built with Hitachi has allowed the development of a new machine, the S Series, which has a focus on the operators,” States Managing Director Ernest Martino.

Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCA) has a Safety First Priority, which means that all business decisions or actions are taken with safety in mind. This value placed on constant improvement within the area of safety is one that is shared by Harrybilt Engineering and aptly reflected with the development of the S Series Rail Machine, described by the company as one of the safest rail machines on the market.

Harrybilt centred the development of the new S-Series machine on this concept of putting Safety First, installing a variety of features and options which enable this excavator to withstand the most severe working conditions without compromising on reliability or efficiency.

“We have found that the Hitachi excavators have been a great machine to work on and convert for our rail application. On this machine, Harrybilt installed a height, slew and load management system as well as a range of other features which allow it to be the safest rail excavator in the industry,” Ernest explained.

The Rail Guidance System for the S-Series machines allows wheeled excavators to travel on road as well as rail. Retractable rail wheel assemblies are installed on the excavator, positioning the vehicle on the rail while allowing the tires to continue to provide traction and braking.

An important feature of the development process is listening to their customers and utilising the feedback to further improve and increase their product range. Ernest spoke of the importance of safety and reliability for operators when using rail machines. “Operators need a machine that can withstand the most severe working conditions while also being safe and simple to operate.”

“It features a key lock out system for unauthorised actions, therefore ensuring the machine always works in a safe state and prevents movement into exclusion zone which could result in a collision. It also features fewer valves which makes it less complicated while still being a smarter proportional system,” said Ernest.

The S-Series machine isn’t the first Hitachi excavator that Harrybilt has converted into a specialty machine. Harrybilt have partnered with Hitachi previously to provide a turn key rail machine for the expanding rail industry.

Some of the machines that have been converted to date are the ZX65USB-5A mini excavator, ZX135US-5 mid-sized excavator and a number of the ZX170W wheeled excavators.

“We receive very positive feedback from our customers on the performance of the Hitachi’s we convert. Many of our machines are located Australia wide so reliability is important. Having a well-supported product with the many service centres located across Australia is critical to us.” Ernest also spoke highly of the support received from Hitachi sales representative Greg Priestly, “Greg has worked hard to support Harrybilt and our new initiative, the S Series, into the Rail Market.”

Harrybilt Engineering prides themselves on developing innovative and safe solutions for every project, something that Hitachi is proud to be associated with and look forward to continuing into the future.

They operate nationwide with head offices and workshops in Victoria and Queensland as well as locations in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth.

Egans differ from traditional plant hire companies with the breadth of additional services they offer. As well as providing operators, they also supply project specific staff including operators for client’s machines, overseers and project supervisors.

Egans Group partner with Indigenous Links to specifically offer the service of Indigenous operators to their wet hire clients. This great initiative supports indigenous communities in finding meaningful, sustainable and long-term employment. The objective is to create an employment pathway for an Indigenous workforce and to train Indigenous men and women for the construction industry.

With an extensive fleet spanning across the country, Egans aren’t strangers to large or long-term projects. Some key developments in which the company is currently involved includes the Westgate Tunnel Project, Cross Yarra Partnership, Moreton Bay Rail Link and Mona Vale Road upgrade. Their current fleet is comprised of several Hitachi and Bell machines including two ZX870LCH-3 excavators, two Hitachi AH400-D-6 ADTs and seven Bell B30E ADTs.

Reduced maintenance costs and being able to provide clients with better reliability are the two leading reasons the team have recently purchased two new Bell B30E Articulated Dump Trucks to replace several of their older units. The B30E trucks have several advantageous features that maximise machine control and safety including Automatic park bake application, GPS-based speed control, on-board weighing and optional reverse camera.

Managing Director Michael Egan believes that Bell’s Fleetm@tic® technology is a huge advantage for the company. “The technology is highly beneficial when it comes to tracking machine utilisation and servicing.”

Bell’s Fleetm@tic® technology is a carefully designed fleet management system providing owners with rapid information to greatly support running operations and maximise returns. Providing automated reports, alerts, production data, pole to pole satellite and GPRS coverage in any location and machine performance data.

Bell B30E Articulated Dump Trucks are also fitted with fuel-efficient emission-certified engines to deliver clean power in every situation. “We’ve noticed that fuel burn is lower with the Mercedes engines in the Bell trucks,” states Michael.

Hitachi has a reputation for providing ‘reliable solutions’, something that aligns with Egans Group’s philosophy and vision. HCA Sales Representative Bradley Hansen said “We are very pleased that Egans Group have chosen Hitachi to enhance their current fleet and we look forward to supporting them into the future”.

SEYCHELL CONSTRUCTIONS

In the vast realms of the construction industry, gas installation is considered a niche market. It’s only natural for a company who specialises in something so specific are highly passionate about what they do. Seychell Constructions are the epitome of what it means to be an ardent and specialised business – essentially just doing what they do best.

Seychell Constructions was established in 1985 by Emanuel Seychell, who already had extensive experience and expertise in the field of gas installation before eventually venturing out on his own. Until his retirement in 1997, Emanuel built the company into a leading service provider within the industry.

This legacy is carried on today by Tony and Darren Seychell, with 35 highly skilled team members and an extensive plant and equipment inventory, ensuring customers are provided with cost effective solutions as well as impeccable service.

Some projects that the company have recently been involved in include; the Cormack Road regulator, new Royal Adelaide Hospital, realignment for the new airport and the sea gas pipeline tie-in.

A relationship standing the test of time

Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCA) have recently celebrated 20 years of operation as a company. Before the establishment of HCA on October 1st 1999, Hitachi construction equipment was previously available to Australian customers through Marubeni Construction and Mining Equipment and previous to that, Blackwood Hodge.

Having purchased at least 25 Hitachi machines since the Blackwood Hodge days, Seychell Constructions has been dealing with HCA since the company was first established. Both companies have seen significant growth and progress over the years, with the relationship now surpassing two decades.

As the Adelaide based company developed further, they required larger equipment, along with service and support to assure the excavators were helping them get the job done to the highest standard.

“For 8 years, the company had been running 8 machines for a major project we completed between 2006 and 2014. This involved all new works from main to meter for the APA Group, in approximately 150 suburbs,” stated Managing Director Tony Seychell.

Service takes priority for Seychell

Replacing their old machines very frequently, the team’s current fleet of Hitachi includes a ZX33U-5A, ZX38U-5A, ZX85USB-5 and the latest addition, a ZX65USB-5A purchased in October of this year, aligning perfectly with HCA’s 20 year anniversary celebrations.

When asked if he had noticed any changes over the last 20 years within HCA, Tony mentioned that the services he receives from the Adelaide branch has been very dependable throughout the years. “(HCA) are consistent with suppling a great service, this shows on how long some employees have been working for the company,” he said.

Speaking of his personal preferences and perceived advantages of Hitachi over other brands, he again referenced the service provided by HCA, commenting “I personally applaud your service department highly and the efforts they go to in meeting customer expectations, it proves HCA’s strong commitment in delivery quality customer service.”

Tony credits HCA and particularly sales representative Stuart Chapman for providing exceptional service at all levels. “We’ve found HCA to be very responsive to requests from the start. From quote to delivery, nothing is too hard.”

Seychell Constructions have been able to both expand and reinforce the notion that they are a leading service provider to the gas industry in South Australia. HCA are beyond proud to have supported the team over the years and look forward to another 20 years of working together.

The company recently celebrated another milestone, with the delivery of the 300,000th machine produced by Tierra to long time Hitachi customer Axle’s Earthmoving & Civil Contractors.

Established in July 2004, Axles Earthmoving & Civil Contractors are located on the Gold Coast, Australia and provide extensive excavation services to South East Queensland and Brisbane. The company specialises in demolition, earthworks, detailed excavation, drainage, road works and civil excavation.

Working by the motto “No job is too big, too small or too difficult”, the company pride themselves on specialising in difficult and challenging jobs, for which Hitachi’s varied range of equipment is perfectly suited.

The Hitachi ZX55U-5 was produced by Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra Co.,Ltd. in April 2019 and delivered on the 30th of October. This landmark excavator is one of the three of the same model ordered to replace their existing ZX50U-5 units, purchased from HCA over 10 years ago in 2008.

The new milestone machine joins an impressive fleet of 21 Hitachi excavators ranging from 1.7 to 30 tonne. It will predominantly be used for civil earthworks projects and utilised in their upcoming developments such as SeaWorld Marine Park, John Flynn Hospital or The Southport School. Over the previous year, they have purchased several brand new machines including a ZX17U-5, ZX85USB-5, ZX135US-5 and ZX260LC-5.

A leading reason that Axle retains loyalty to the Hitachi brand is the Consite Pocket app. The automated data report service allows for observation of the operational status of the fleet as well as monitoring the machine’s day to day operation status in order to maintain optimum efficiency and performance.

Other features of Hitachi excavators that Axle enjoys include great fuel economy, reliability, machine servicing and colour. “Reliable, fuel economy and service back up from HCA is part of the appeal of purchasing Hitachi equipment” stated Axle. “Also orange is my favourite colour, it matches my eyes” he joked.

The affiliation between Axles Earthmoving and HCA is one that is mutually beneficial, with both companies growing and developing over their long history. Hitachi’s reputation within Australia has greatly assisted Axle’s Earthmoving in growing to the size it is today, now with 30 employees as well as a range of subcontractors.

“Our brand loyalty to Hitachi has been crucial in building the business to the position it is in today, instilling dependability of our plant and equipment in our customers.” Says Axle.

This enduring partnership between both companies has been reinforced by a great relationship with Sales Representative Anthony Smith. Axle expresses a genuine appreciation for the support from HCA. “We can’t get the job done without surrounding ourselves with quality people” he states.

“Hitachi are a well-known brand within Australia and have earned respect from customers due to the quality and reliability of their machines. Once you get on board with the Hitachi family life is good.”

This is particularly true with the ZX360LCH-5 Hitachi mid-size excavator assigned to a significant industrial subdivision in Eastern Creek – Sydney, where the contractor needed a reliable and cost-effective earthmoving solution.

AWJ Civil based in Western Sydney recently took delivery of their new ZX360LCH-5 joining a Hitachi family including a ZW330-5 wheel loader, ZX17U-5 mini excavator and two mid-size excavator’s the ZX85USB-5 and ZX360LC-5. Both the ZX360LCH-5 and ZW330-5 are now working in conjunction together on the landmark EC5 project delivering on behalf of their client Frasers Property Australia.

The project commenced in June 2017, this industrial subdivision will be vital in providing further logistical support to an ever growing region. The notable project features include the site area – 26 Ha, bulk earthworks – 450,000 m3 (423,000m3 completed to date), 1800m stormwater, cast in-situ pits of up to 6m deep, 1 kilometre of council road works, 8,500m2 of basin works and 4,500m2 of retaining walls across 8 walls (1500m2 were completed in September alone).

Since putting the machinery to work, Craig Dunn AWJ’s Operations Manager comments it’s been the right fit for the project so far, “Overall, the ZX360LCH-5 is the perfect solution for our needs, as it does every aspect of the job very well. I’m more than satisfied with the level of productivity and I know that we will be able to get even more from this machine over time,” he said.

“I have worked with many machines over the years, but this is the one that I like operating the most,” says Andy Maddock, AWJ’s site operator after the completion of 157 working hours. “It’s easy to manoeuvre and allows me to quickly assess the weight of the load in case there’s too much weight in the bucket. Otherwise, it just works like a normal excavator!

“I am happy to be operating this machine every day on such a challenging job site. The cab is very spacious yet comfortable, quiet inside and out compared to other models on site,” continues Andy.

Otherwise specialising in large earthworks, remediation and commercial subdivisions, AWJ was established over 30 years ago as a family owned and operated company. “Today boasting over 100 employees, our ethos of striving to exceed client expectations of quality, time and cost is a firmly concreted foundation,” said Martin O’Connell Managing Director of AWJ Civil.

“We have dedicated engineers supported by an experienced team of AWJ senior managers who are devoted to collaboratively delivering on multifaceted projects in an open and honest way. This approach is utilised in all facets of our business decisions particularly when it comes to choosing partners to supply machinery to deliver on multi-million dollar projects such as Eastern Creek,” said Martin.

“The commitment shown by Hitachi for after-sales service and support are key to our decision in moving forward with Hitachi equipment for future projects in business.”

To combat this, WEM recently took delivery of four B45E Bell Articulated Dump Truck (ADT).

Michael Ragg, Director and General Manager of WEM says they’ve used Bell ADT’s for many years and it was an easy decision to welcome on board four more.

“The B45E's come with standard features that are imperative to our operation. Such as the keyless start, automatic traction control, hill assist, hill decent control, auto park application, onboard weighting system and bin tip prevention which incorporate pitch and roll sensors preventing the bin operation if the truck is in an unsafe position. There’s a standard 10’inch colour monitor enabling the operator’s easy viewing of daily checks, machine operation and machine adjustments from inside their cabin,” he said.

The Gables project is situated north-west of Sydney’s CBD in the Hills district, spread over 330 hectares and will house more than 13,000 people when completed. Michael says it will provide ‘The Gables residents with benefits of living in a master planned community that provides over $315 million worth of community infrastructure, services and utilities.’

Like many large projects, Michael has considered the key engineering challenges, ‘throughout the duration of this project we will dewater 52 large site dams using irrigation and infiltration techniques to prevent discharge into nearby creek systems. Extensive swale construction and trunk drainage systems throughout the subdivision. The pressure sewer system required collaborative design amendments to accommodate specific site features.’

WEM are known as one of the largest and most professional earthmoving companies that specialise in sub division work within NSW and have been using Bell ADT’s for many years, they know the Bell product has proven itself as being a very fuel efficient and reliable dump truck with class leading power to weight ratios.

The E-series range was launched three years ago with the smaller B25E and B30E. The large trucks add five new models: the B35E, B40E, B45E, B50E and the innovative 4 x 4 crossover concept, the B60E.

Incorporating the latest in ADT design and technology, the Bell E-series Large Trucks are the culmination of three and a half years of development and testing, representing an evolution on the D-series range, which has set industry standards and led ADT innovations for over a decade.

Bell and Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia Pty Ltd (HCA) are particularly buoyed about the 45-tonner in light of increased global demand for this truck size. With its rated payload of 41000kg, a bin volume of 25m³ and a powerful new engine, the B45E has the potential to become the most popular model in the range due to its overall value proposition to customers.

Michael credits HCA for not only supplying reliable Bell machinery to WEM but providing impeccable service when it’s needed. “Since day one, we’ve had support from HCA and in particular our Major Accounts Manager Scott McClement, who ensures minimal downtime on service and delivery.”

Striving to meet customer satisfaction and go the extra mile, Michael comments ‘the machines have outstanding reliability with minimum down time. In particular, the operator comfort and overall machine performance is second to none.’

Overall Michael credits the relationship he’s built with HCA’s Major Accounts Manager, Scott McClement - “He makes it easy to gain information when required and provides honest time lines on machine delivery dates, so I can meet the demands of our business overall.”

Owner Matt Christian invested in the mini excavator in 2004 during the start-up phase of his business, DigginIt Earthworx. Specialising in residential and commercial construction projects across the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

“When we purchased the machine, we found that it out-performed any other machine I’d operated previously,” says Matt. “This has continued to be our experience and now I wouldn’t even consider another brand.”

“The wear and tear we put our machines through is tough to say the least, but Hitachi equipment, starting with that first used excavator, well and truly outperformed all other equipment. I was stunned that we were able to do 3,000 hours without any problems on a second hand machine.”

Matt has since purchased another four Hitachi excavators, starting with a ZX50U-2 in 2007, and followed by a ZX38U-5 and ZX55U-5, and a ZX85USB-3 medium excavator. The durability and reliability of the Hitachi machines have been particularly impressive: “We clocked over 7,000 hours with the ZX50U-2 without a single issue,” he explains.

“We use the machinery on all our rock-breaking tasks, and find the Hitachi equipment to be both robust and able to withstand the harshest of conditions.”

“All of the mini-excavators I have are powerful enough to excavate rough terrain, and their sensitivity and response make them the best to operate in any job. They are usually operated for 10 hours per day, so both durability and operator comfort are important.”

In addition, Matt has complete confidence in his authorised dealer, Hitachi Construction Machinery (Australia) Pty Ltd. to ensure that downtime is kept to a minimum.

“The Hitachi after-sales is another positive factor. There is always a quick turnaround with parts and they are always readily available even after hours. Keeping worksites running is essential in my line of work.”

Citywide Civil Engineering located in Sydney, NSW have grown their orange family to tackle major projects across the metropolitan city commenting on the ‘ease of use and comfortable cab’ as driving factors. Business owner Bill Mihalopoulos says ‘the overall intuitiveness of the machines was my reasoning for purchasing Hitachi excavators, they just make the job easy.’

The company entered the construction game in 2009 and now undertakes a multitude of civil excavation works. Activities include bulk excavation, pavement, drainage, road reconstruction and public rehabilitation works but Bill says their real secret to success lies in the strong relationships they’ve formed with councils, developers, and local communities.

“We work on a variety of projects, in particular with government bodies such as council groups, developers, Housing NSW, Transport Construction Authority and the Road Traffic Authority (RTA) so the requirements to deliver on time is imperative to our success,” he said.

“Reinvestment in our business is important to support the needs of our high profile clients, so we continue to expand our range of owned machinery. So far we have a ZX17, ZX38, ZX55, ZX85, ZX330 and the big ZX350 excavator from Hitachi. They supply machines of outstanding quality and cover the full product range of capacities from the small 1.7 tonne excavator to the bigger 35 tonne machines. In addition, Hitachi provide a full scheduled service to all our machines which allows us to meet the course of projects in a timely manner.”

“We’re currently working on a large bulk excavation works for the new development at Wentworth Point for Dasco Australia requiring specific excavators. Our Hitachi excavators have been excellent for this job in particular. All our equipment is maintained to the highest standards ensuring compliance with all operational safety considerations. Furthermore our skilled and motivated operators are trained to the highest industry standards to ensure our quality of work & provide for a safe environment.”

When asking Bill about the feedback from his operators, he mentioned the Hitachi excavators overall are fully ‘conversant’ with machine operation which gives his operators the confidence to work competently and autonomously on a job site.

Bill couldn’t be happier with his new machines and believes their living up to their name.

“Bulk and detailed excavation which at times require machines with specific capabilities and small machines for easy manoeuvrability in restricted spaces. The Hitachi excavators are excellent for reliability and require minimum down time,” he said.

He began servicing the coast as a sole trader and operator and has since built up his business with a strong Hitachi fleet of excavators. Now established, Grant is a well-respected machinery and business professional among tradespeople and developers within the industry. He is supported in his business by his wife and children, and a reliable team of employees.

Utilising advanced technology with minimal environmental impact, RME Civil maintains a fleet of earthmoving and specialised construction equipment, which forms part of their unique formula in transforming their clients’ visions into reality when it comes to their projects.

Their recent investment and new additions to the fleet include the Hitachi ZX55U-5 excavator and for the first time a John Deere 323E compact track loader (CTL). RME Civil now hold a portfolio of nine machines along with their existing fleet of the ZX130H-1, ZX135-3US, ZX135US off set boom, ZX130-5, ZX210H-3, ZX240-3 and a ZX55-5 – assuring the number will continue to grow.

“Our machines work on a variety of projects from concreting to drainage, structural wall construction and we also have the flexibility to supply plant under hire. However, lately our biggest focus has been excavating and preparing land for people selling off their soil,” said Grant.

“The Central Coast is a fast developing area outside of Sydney and RME have had to continue to meet that demand. By welcoming the new John Deere CTL and the two Hitachi excavators, we assured this is possible to meet deadlines for our clients.”

Owner Grant pictured with his RME workers

“We’re currently suppling excavators to Seymour Whyte Constructions for the sub-division of 145 housing at Warnervale NSW.”

Grant credits HCA for not only supplying reliable machinery but providing imperative service when it’s needed.

“Since day one, we’ve had support from HCA and in particular our field service mechanic Ricki McDermott who has ensured the machines have minimal downtime," he said. Ricki is a long-standing employee of HCA and just recently celebrated his 35th year with the company and alike RME has worked closely with a range of customers along the Central Coast of NSW.

Striving to meet customer satisfaction and go the extra mile, Grant comments ‘the machines have outstanding reliability with minimum downtime. In particular, the operator comfort and overall machine performance is second to none.’

“When the final trimming is done, the Hitachi equipment makes our job look easy, with even our trainee operators able to undertake some of our detailed projects.”

Overall Grant credits the relationship he’s built with his Sales Representative, Jessica Hurst. “She makes it easy to gain information when required and provides honest time lines on machine delivery dates, so I can meet the demands of my business overall," he said.

One company that has embraced emerging trends and product innovation is family-owned Elbourne Plant Hire, who specialise in providing contracting and plant hire services to the private and commercial sectors including government agencies.

Phillip and Adam Elbourne with Adam's sons and their family dog

Phillip Elbourne started the company in the early 1980’s as a sole trader only carrying out rural maintenance and earthmoving, until his son Adam joined in 2000 and it grew into what it stands today. The father and son duo now work closely together to focus on providing their customers with solutions to complicated elements within each project. Since the addition of two new Hitachi excavators, the ZX135 and ZX290 Adam says ‘we’ve been able to take on road and access construction projects, bulk earthmoving and final trim excavations, pulverising and crushing a wide range of materials to vegetation clearing and management, rural land improvement and maintenance.’

Elbourne have been a long-standing customer of Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia Pty Ltd (HCA) for not only the extensive range of excavators but as a supplier of John Deere to the Australian market.

“We have always had nothing but John Deere graders which have given us long lasting endurance & reliability. Hitachi being the John Deere dealer has always serviced our needs well so it made sense to purchase Hitachi excavators and have not looked back since our first machine was delivered,” said Adam.

Now with two John Deere graders and a track loader on their fleet, Elbourne have advanced their capabilities to the Hunter region. “Our unique range of attachments and experienced operators specialising in their fields has created opportunities to branch into a number of niche markets including powerline infrastructure projects, recycled material processing & handling whilst maintaining our core business services in the earthmoving and construction industry,” said Adam.

Growing up with a father in construction, Adam is no amateur when it comes to appreciating quality machinery. With the John Deere name a regular brand within their household, it’s fair to say his admiration for them is very green. “Our John Deere grader 772GP model cab controls make it very easy for an operator that has always used conventional cab controls to adapt very quickly due a very similar control pattern at your fingertips. The pushing power of John Deere graders is unmatched in the market having seen and experienced them all. Fuel economy is great, performance is outstanding along with their strength and reliability John Deere in my opinion is the only way to go.”

However with market demand and impending opportunities, Phillip and Adam have become susceptible to the Hitachi excavator range to help drive their business forward. Elbourne now own two Hitachi ZX17U-5, another two ZX65USB, ZX135US-5, ZX200LC-3, ZX240LC-3, ZX250H-3 and a ZX290LC-5.

Commenting that the ‘operators often remark on the smoothness and power the Hitachi hydraulics produce when using all functions to carry out a task.’

“The dash 3 machines have a lot to offer with operator comfort which was hard to match but the comfort, design and useability of the improved cab design in the dash 5 excavator is a credit to Hitachi,” said Adam.

“Overall we are impressed with the reliability and performance of our whole Hitachi and John Deere fleet. Even the machines that are getting up in work hours don’t show the signs of wear and tear like you’d expect with one of them running around the clock 5 days a week for months without a worry.”

“Our relationship with Hitachi and Grant Dear in Newcastle is very strong, our decision making process is easy when you know you have the support of someone who has plenty of experience in the industry. Grant really listens to our requirements and offers the best solution every time. Hitachi have proved their support to us with after sales, spares and service and are always very helpful which makes it easy to keep coming back.”

The locally owned civil construction company is based in Albion Park Rail with 47 permanent employees and several contractors who complete projects in the Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wollongong City Council areas. Peter Yates, Owner and Director of Yatcon Civil says “the company prides themselves on specialising in the safe and efficient construction of all aspects of residential subdivisions, sewer and water main infrastructure, as well as large scale quarry works.”

Completing million dollar projects over the last 5 years, recently including a number of sub-divisions at Tullimbar, Mount Terry and Kiama with roads, drainage and Sydney Water assets built over vacant land. Their previous ZX-3 excavators have been put to the test. “We know Hitachi make a tough, hardy machine with most machines obtaining 11,000+ hours prior to upgrading to the new Hitachi ZX-5 excavators. Reliability, price and availability of parts, which generally are next day delivery, are also key factors in our brand loyalty,” said Peter.

“Yatcon Civil complete all subdivision tasks in house, from concreting to drainage to road construction. We also have access to materials due to our relationship with Holcim, our major quarrying, where we move approximately 200,000 tonne per month with 110T excavator as the main load out tool.

Yatcon Civil places OH&S Regulations as a priority and implementation of controls is paramount on all Yatcon Civils’ construction sites. “The projects we’ve completed in the past 5 years have been in environmentally sensitive areas so the equipment used is to a high standard and is all the latest model machinery. We know Hitachi’s machinery are engineered with the operator’s safety a number one priority,” said Peter.

Additionally, during the assembly process of the excavator fleet, wireless monitoring cameras were utilised to precisely align the lower and upper structures of the machines. In doing so, personnel were kept at a safe distance from the lift zone area, eliminating potential harm.

“The machines are all running well, with minimal down time. All operators of the machines are commenting on how smooth and fuel efficient the machines are. The new computer systems which run through the monitor of the ZX-5 machines are superior to other comparable makes on the market,” he said.

In the 13T class, Yatcon Civil has 2 of the other leading brands which run side by side with the Hitachi ZX135-5 and ZX-3 machine and all operators rate the Hitachi machine above its competitors. The operator of the Hitachi ZX135-5 at Yatcon Civil says, “It is very stable, powerful and offers more capacity. This is the machine’s first job and it’s been useful to test it with different attachments, such as the hammer, which is only required occasionally to break up rock. The monitor is also useful for checking information and the rear-view camera is ideal. Not to mention the low fuel consumption and smoothness of operation.”

“We have 5 sub divisions in the local area under construction with approximately 250 lots to be completed before March 2017, so we’re very much looking forward to seeing these machines perform,” said Peter.

Yatcon Civil has a good relationship with Hitachi Construction machinery, in particular with Andrew Sturgeon, HCA’s Southern Regional Sales Representative in New South Wales. During the purchasing of the machines good trade values were given and the deals were made. “Andrew ensured we were given the opportunity by Hitachi to field test a new 200LC proto-type machine which is performing very well at the present moment,” said Peter.

Peter’s strategy is to utilise relatively new machinery and so the fleet is updated from the authorised HCA dealer in Sydney, after each model reaches approximately 6,000 - 7,000 working hours. “This is especially the case for the latest generation of Zaxis excavators,” says Peter, “which have comparatively low fuel consumption and lower overall running costs.”

Peter says “The team at Hitachi do a great job, especially as they go out of their way to help us when the need arises. It’s about the whole package, with many things contributing to the success of our Hitachi machinery.”

“The new excavators are working well together and they have proved to be a strong combination for this job. They can operate in restricted areas and there is enough power when we need it. We are also able to take care not to damage our immediate working environment. I can guarantee, when purchasing new machinery - Hitachi will be the first port of call for any future acquisitions of machinery.”

Acquiring the new dash 5 was a vital move in order for the Quarry to remain progressive with modern technology. According to Quarry Manager Daniel Moait, “We load everything with the wheel loader now, it is a part of our operation. The Hitachi ZW370-5 speeds up the process considerably and the size of this machine has proved a perfect fit for us.”

The reliability of the Hitachi brand was a key factor in the purchase decision for Hillview Quarries, who begun using Hitachi construction equipment in 2013, when the company purchased a Hitachi ZX350LCH excavator which now has more than 5,000 working hours on the clock.

Paul Nitas, CEO of Hillview Quarries says the Wheel Loader is a credit to the Hitachi brand, “Ever since we took delivery of our first Hitachi excavator, it was unbelievable to have such a high level of reliability, averaging 99% availability.”

Now with the new ZW370-5 Wheel Loader, Hillview Quarries are putting the machine to the test. Equipped with a 15.68 litre six-cylinder water-cooled turbo engine that enables a powerful digging performance, impressive travel speeds and a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 10%. “Our operators have found it easier to manoeuvre than previous models, it has a new clutch cut-off system to control the timing of the clutch for smooth operation when loading, regardless of the terrain,” said Paul.

Comfort and safety have been enhanced by the spacious cab, air conditioning and sound insulation, and greater visibility due to the pillar-less windshield and large sun visor. The new ZW370-5 Wheel Loader is also easy to maintain to ensure maximum availability, with easily accessible greasing points, oil levels and fuel filters.

Equipped with a 6.2m3 bucket capacity, it will load more than 2,000 tonnes of materials per day, working from 6am to 4.30pm, five days a week. Approximately 80% of the materials are delivered to customers working on road and other general construction sites within a 60kM radius of the site.

“My personal opinion is that if it’s Hitachi, it will look after itself. The engineering is so good, especially in comparison to other brands, with regard to the reliability and build quality,” said Paul.

“The reliability of these machines in quarry applications is very important, the loader was a little unknown however when we were able to trial the loader onsite for the week, the feedback from our operators agreed it outperformed its competitors. The competitive price also helped with our decision, including the incredible service to which we received from our Sales Representative Wesley Don and the team at Dandenong.

“From our initial request to the quotation phase, through to onsite trialling and final delivery which included Senior Management strongly supporting their product and staff, to ensure it was a memorable experience for all. It’s the best understanding & delivery of customer service I have experienced in the last 30 years within this industry,” said Paul.

Apart from a long-standing business relationship, Hillview Quarries and HCA share similar values in business etiquette. One company that has embraced emerging trends and product innovation is Urban Earthmoving (QLD) Pty Ltd, a specialist in the earthmoving game with services spanning both demolition and construction projects.

Starting out in 2007, Brisbane-based Urban Earthmoving is responsible for many of Queensland’s major demolitions and earthmoving constructions. Vince Cubito, Director of Urban Earthmoving said “Starting out in 2007 with my first second hand 3 tonne combo, I worked towards looking for and maintaining a stable client base and just concentrating on superior service. Wanting to give them more, I moved to dry hiring excavators to be able to start adding demolition to my services but still without any other employees for the first 3 years of business. Once I had enough money, I bought my first second hand 135-1 (which I still have and is still out working with nearly 10,000hrs) to help me demolish and bulk excavate.”

Utilising advanced technology with minimal environmental impact, Urban Earthmoving maintains a fleet of earthmoving and specialised construction equipment, which forms part of their unique formula in transforming their clients’ visions into reality when it comes to their projects. Their recent investment and new additions to the fleet include the Hitachi ZX135, ZX330LC, ZX225LC-5 and most recently a ZX135US-5 excavator. Urban now hold a portfolio of four new excavators along with their existing fleet of the ZX50U-3, ZX135US-1, ZX225US-3, ZX330LC-3 and ZX470LCH-3 of Hitachi machines and assures that number will continue to grow, ‘the smoothness and speed of the equipment, especially our 225 which is my favourite. It’s a combination of things but the stand out benefit would have to be the fuel economy and resale value,’ he said.

Vince relies heavily on the quality of Hitachi machines to get the job done, “Our Hitachi machines do a variety of work from general works with plumbers and concreters to our larger excavators running a variety of attachments such as 50,000 pound Auger drives drilling 15meters deep as well as Rock Breakers, Hydraulic grabs etc. The huge flow rates these machines offer work very well with our attachments,” he said.

Striving to meet customer satisfaction and go the extra mile, Vince comments ‘the machines are very reliable and reputable and I think customers know that also. Our gear never stops throughout the year so it’s great to be able to run them trouble free for so long.’

“We are working within a number of high rise developments in the Brisbane area as well as new sub divisions, shopping centres and infrastructure works.”

“I believe in strong business relationships, I’ve always trusted my Hitachi representative, Ross Anderson and I look forward to further business dealings in the future.”
