What do you get when you cross a Hitachi ZX170W-5 wheeled excavator and Harrybilt Engineering’s rail system technology?! One of the safest and most reliable rail machines on the market.

Harrybilt Engineering noticed the requirement for a rail machine that could withstand extremely severe working conditions whist also being safe, versatile, efficient and simple to operate. Harrybilt centred the development of the new S-Series machine on this concept of putting Safety First, installing a variety of features and options which enable this excavator to withstand the most severe working conditions without compromising on reliability or efficiency.

“We have found that the Hitachi excavators have been a great machine to work on and convert for our rail application. On this machine, Harrybilt installed a height, slew and load management system as well as a range of other features which allow it to be the safest rail excavator in the industry,” Ernest explained.

The Rail Guidance System for the S-Series machines allows wheeled excavators to travel on road as well as rail. Retractable rail wheel assemblies are installed on the excavator, positioning the vehicle on the rail while allowing the tires to continue to provide traction and braking.

An important feature of the development process is listening to their customers and utilising the feedback to further improve and increase their product range. Ernest spoke of the importance of safety and reliability for operators when using rail machines. “Operators need a machine that can withstand the most severe working conditions while also being safe and simple to operate.”

“It features a key lock out system for unauthorised actions, therefore ensuring the machine always works in a safe state and prevents movement into exclusion zone which could result in a collision. It also features fewer valves which makes it less complicated while still being a smarter proportional system,” said Ernest.

The S-Series machine isn’t the first Hitachi excavator that Harrybilt has converted into a specialty machine. Harrybilt have partnered with Hitachi previously to provide a turn key rail machine for the expanding rail industry.

Some of the machines that have been converted to date are the ZX65USB-5A mini excavator, ZX135US-5 mid-sized excavator and a number of the ZX170W wheeled excavators.

“We receive very positive feedback from our customers on the performance of the Hitachi’s we convert. Many of our machines are located Australia wide so reliability is important. In the vast realms of the construction industry, gas installation is considered a niche market. It’s only natural for a company who specialises in something so specific are highly passionate about what they do. Seychell Constructions are the epitome of what it means to be an ardent and specialised business – essentially just doing what they do best.

Seychell Constructions was established in 1985 by Emanuel Seychell, who already had extensive experience and expertise in the field of gas installation before eventually venturing out on his own. Until his retirement in 1997, Emanuel built the company into a leading service provider within the industry.

A relationship standing the test of time

Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCA) have recently celebrated 20 years of operation as a company. Before the establishment of HCA on October 1st 1999, Hitachi construction equipment was previously available to Australian customers through Marubeni Construction and Mining Equipment and previous to that, Blackwood Hodge.

Having purchased at least 25 Hitachi machines since the Blackwood Hodge days, Seychell Constructions has been dealing with HCA since the company was first established. Both companies have seen significant growth and progress over the years, with the relationship now surpassing two decades.

As the Adelaide based company developed further, they required larger equipment, along with service and support to assure the excavators were helping them get the job done to the highest standard.

“For 8 years, the company had been running 8 machines for a major project we completed between 2006 and 2014. This involved all new works from main to meter for the APA Group, in approximately 150 suburbs,” stated Managing Director Tony Seychell.

Service takes priority for Seychell

Replacing their old machines very frequently, the team’s current fleet of Hitachi includes a ZX33U-5A, ZX38U-5A, ZX85USB-5 and the latest addition, a ZX65USB-5A purchased in October of this year, aligning perfectly with HCA’s 20 year anniversary celebrations.

When asked if he had noticed any changes over the last 20 years within HCA, Tony mentioned that the services he receives from the Adelaide branch has been very dependable throughout the years. “(HCA) are consistent with suppling a great service, this shows on how long some employees have been working for the company,” he said.

Speaking of his personal preferences and perceived advantages of Hitachi over other brands, he again referenced the service provided by HCA, commenting “I personally applaud your service department highly and the efforts they go to in meeting customer expectations, it proves HCA’s strong commitment in delivery quality customer service.”

Tony credits HCA and particularly sales representative Stuart Chapman for providing exceptional service at all levels. “We’ve found HCA to be very responsive to requests from the start. From quote to delivery, nothing is too hard.”

AXLE'S EARTHMOVING RECEIVES 300,000TH MACHINE PRODUCED BY HITACHI

Celebrating their 20 year anniversary in October 2019, Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia (HCA) have been providing Australian customers with high quality, reliable construction equipment for over two decades. The company recently celebrated another milestone, with the delivery of the 300,000th machine produced by Tierra to long time Hitachi customer Axle’s Earthmoving & Civil Contractors.

Established in July 2004, Axles Earthmoving & Civil Contractors are located on the Gold Coast, Australia and provide extensive excavation services to South East Queensland and Brisbane. The company specialises in demolition, earthworks, detailed excavation, drainage, road works and civil excavation.

Working by the motto “No job is too big, too small or too difficult”, the company pride themselves on specialising in difficult and challenging jobs, for which Hitachi’s varied range of equipment is perfectly suited.

The Hitachi ZX55U-5 was produced by Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra Co.,Ltd. in April 2019 and delivered on the 30th of October. This landmark excavator is one of the three of the same model ordered to replace their existing ZX50U-5 units, purchased from HCA over 10 years ago in 2008.

The new milestone machine joins an impressive fleet of 21 Hitachi excavators ranging from 1.7 to 30 tonne. It will predominantly be used for civil earthworks projects and utilised in their upcoming developments such as SeaWorld Marine Park, John Flynn Hospital or The Southport School. Over the previous year, they have purchased several brand new machines including a ZX17U-5, ZX85USB-5, ZX135US-5 and ZX260LC-5.

A leading reason that Axle retains loyalty to the Hitachi brand is the Consite Pocket app. The automated data report service allows for observation of the operational status of the fleet as well as monitoring the machine’s day to day operation status in order to maintain optimum efficiency and performance.

Since their release into the Australian market, the Hitachi Zaxis-5 mini excavators have infiltrated construction sites across the country.

GTS Earthworks didn’t waste any time putting in their order for 2018, after recently taking delivery of a Hitachi ZX33U-5 and two ZX55U-5 mini excavators.

The privately owned company is based Kurnell in New South Wales, with 11-years in the construction game. Their first Hitachi was purchased in 2007, then a ZX40U-2 mini excavator, ZX50U-3, ZX40U-3, ZX120-3 and ZX135US-5.

Starting out in excavation for swimming pools and over the years has grown into the commercial arena and residential projects ranging from small detail to large bulk excavations.

Business owner Gavin Sant GTS couldn’t wait to get his hands on the new Hitachi mini after experience with the previous model.

“All my operators are happy with the performance, the advantages we get out of them with fuel and productivity. The service and after-sales from Hitachi proves nothing is ever a problem they can’t handle,” said Gavin.

AWJ expands with Hitachi

Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia Pty Ltd (HCA) is renowned for providing a specialist range of reliable solutions to the construction industry. This is particularly true with the ZX360LCH-5 Hitachi mid-size excavator assigned to a significant industrial subdivision in Eastern Creek – Sydney, where the contractor needed a reliable and cost-effective earthmoving solution.

AWJ Civil based in Western Sydney recently took delivery of their new ZX360LCH-5 joining a Hitachi family including a ZW330-5 wheel loader, ZX17U-5 mini excavator and two mid-size excavator’s the ZX85USB-5 and ZX360LC-5. Both the ZX360LCH-5 and ZW330-5 are now working in conjunction together on the landmark EC5 project delivering on behalf of their client Frasers Property Australia.

The project commenced in June 2017, this industrial subdivision will be vital in providing further logistical support to an ever growing region. The notable project features include the site area – 26 Ha, bulk earthworks – 450,000 m3 (423,000m3 completed to date), 1800m stormwater, cast in-situ pits of up to 6m deep, 1 kilometre of council road works, 8,500m2 of basin works and 4,500m2 of retaining walls across 8 walls (1500m2 were completed in September alone).

Since putting the machinery to work, Craig Dunn AWJ’s Operations Manager comments it’s been the right fit for the project so far, “Overall, the ZX360LCH-5 is the perfect solution for our needs, as it does every aspect of the job very well. I’m more than satisfied with the level of productivity and I know that we will be able to get even more from this machine over time,” he said.

“I have worked with many machines over the years, but this is the one that I like operating the most,” says Andy Maddock, AWJ’s site operator after the completion of 157 working hours. “It’s easy to manoeuvre and allows me to quickly assess the weight of the load in case there’s too much weight in the bucket. Otherwise, it just works like a normal excavator!

WHAT’S BIG AND YELLOW – A BELL ARTICULATED DUMP TRUCK

Western Sydney based Civil contractors, Western Earthmoving (WEM) were awarded a civil contract worth over $40 million to deliver two gateway intersections into The Gables and earthworks, roads and infrastructure for the first 540 lots. To combat this, WEM recently took delivery of four B45E Bell Articulated Dump Truck (ADT).

Michael Ragg, Director and General Manager of WEM says they’ve used Bell ADT’s for many years and it was an easy decision to welcome on board four more.

“The B45E's come with standard features that are imperative to our operation. Such as the keyless start, automatic traction control, hill assist, hill decent control, auto park application, onboard weighting system and bin tip prevention which incorporate pitch and roll sensors preventing the bin operation if the truck is in an unsafe position. There’s a standard 10’inch colour monitor enabling the operator’s easy viewing of daily checks, machine operation and machine adjustments from inside their cabin,” he said.

The Gables project is situated north-west of Sydney’s CBD in the Hills district, spread over 330 hectares and will house more than 13,000 people when completed. A loyal Port Lincoln customer has confirmed his loyalty to Hitachi Construction Machinery, following the initial purchase of a 3.5-tonne used model. Owner Matt Christian invested in the mini excavator in 2004 during the start-up phase of his business, DigginIt Earthworx. Specialising in residential and commercial construction projects across the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

“When we purchased the machine, we found that it out-performed any other machine I’d operated previously,” says Matt. “This has continued to be our experience and now I wouldn’t even consider another brand.”

“The wear and tear we put our machines through is tough to say the least, but Hitachi equipment, starting with that first used excavator, well and truly outperformed all other equipment. I was stunned that we were able to do 3,000 hours without any problems on a second hand machine.”

A recently opened new Recycling Facility located in Silverwater, Sydney are reaping the benefits of its Hitachi ZW250-5 wheel loader. Delivered in late November 2017, it is the first Hitachi machine for business owner Jason O’Sullivan at MET Recycling.

The company specialises in haulage and disposal of all material classifications, ensuring that all materials are transported to suitably licensed tips or facilities which hold current D.A approvals.

Equipped with a 4m³, the ZX250-5 has already clocked 500 working hours so far. The new wheel loader is utilised to load various materials such as brick, cement, clay and other acceptable tipping materials for haulage and disposal. The site is also equipped to supply product including DG20 Spec 3051, Sandstone 75mm minus, Aggregates (all sizes), Crusher Dust, Filling Sands, Turf Underlay, all of which the ZX250-5 comes in contact with.

“The new loader is put to the test on a daily basis in the yard to deliver on all services our company provides, it’s resilience and outstanding performance in efficiency and productivity have impressed me as a new Hitachi machine owner,” said Jason.

MET is Code Compliant, all trucks and machines are regularly serviced with operators and drivers holding relevant cards to work on rail. The site is equipped to work a 24 hour day over 7 days a week in demand. On average MET are processing 3,000 tonnes of recycling material per day and they aim to undertake up to 300 truck movements per day going forward.

“It’s imperative that the wheel loaders are reliable above all else, we have big plans for this site so we need to ensure the jobs are completed in a timely manner in order to prepare for the future,” said Jason.

Since the release of the new Hitachi Zaxis-5 range of excavators, owners and operators are beginning to reap the benefits from the enhanced features they possess.

Grant Robertson is one of the most experienced excavation specialists along the Central Coast, starting out in 1992 as formerly ‘Robbo’s Excavation’ – his family owned business soon became RME Civil, as it is known today.

Yatcon Civil and Hitachi Construction Machinery (Australia) Pty Ltd (HCA) continue to work together to grow their existing fleet of Hitachi equipment to service the developing areas within the Illawarra region on the south coast after taking delivery of six new Hitachi ZAXIS-5 excavators from 4 tonne to 35 tonne. The locally owned civil construction company is based in Albion Park Rail with 47 permanent employees and several contractors who complete projects in the Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wollongong City Council areas. Peter Yates, Owner and Director of Yatcon Civil says “the company prides themselves on specialising in the safe and efficient construction of all aspects of residential subdivisions, sewer and water main infrastructure, as well as large scale quarry works.”

Completing million dollar projects over the last 5 years, recently including a number of sub-divisions at Tullimbar, Mount Terry and Kiama with roads, drainage and Sydney Water assets built over vacant land. Their previous ZX-3 excavators have been put to the test. “We know Hitachi make a tough, hardy machine with most machines obtaining 11,000+ hours prior to upgrading to the new Hitachi ZX-5 excavators. “Yatcon Civil complete all subdivision tasks in house, from concreting to drainage to road construction. We also have access to materials due to our relationship with Holcim, our major quarrying, where we move approximately 200,000 tonne per month with 110T excavator as the main load out tool.

Yatcon Civil places OH&S Regulations as a priority and implementation of controls is paramount on all Yatcon Civils’ construction sites. “The projects we’ve completed in the past 5 years have been in environmentally sensitive areas so the equipment used is to a high standard and is all the latest model machinery. Additionally, during the assembly process of the excavator fleet, wireless monitoring cameras were utilised to precisely align the lower and upper structures of the machines. In doing so, personnel were kept at a safe distance from the lift zone area, eliminating potential harm.

“The machines are all running well, with minimal down time. All operators of the machines are commenting on how smooth and fuel efficient the machines are. The new computer systems which run through the monitor of the ZX-5 machines are superior to other comparable makes on the market,” he said.

In the 13T class, Yatcon Civil has 2 of the other leading brands which run side by side with the Hitachi ZX135-5 and ZX-3 machine and all operators rate the Hitachi machine above its competitors. The operator of the Hitachi ZX135-5 at Yatcon Civil says, “It is very stable, powerful and offers more capacity. This is the machine’s first job and it’s been useful to test it with different attachments, such as the hammer, which is only required occasionally to break up rock. The monitor is also useful for checking information and the rear-view camera is ideal. Not to mention the low fuel consumption and smoothness of operation.”

“We have 5 sub divisions in the local area under construction with approximately 250 lots to be completed before March 2017, so we’re very much looking forward to seeing these machines perform,” said Peter.

Peter’s strategy is to utilise relatively new machinery and so the fleet is updated from the authorised HCA dealer in Sydney, after each model reaches approximately 6,000 - 7,000 working hours. “This is especially the case for the latest generation of Zaxis excavators,” says Peter, “which have comparatively low fuel consumption and lower overall running costs.”

Peter says “The team at Hitachi do a great job, especially as they go out of their way to help us when the need arises. It’s about the whole package, with many things contributing to the success of our Hitachi machinery.”

“The new excavators are working well together and they have proved to be a strong combination for this job. They can operate in restricted areas and there is enough power when we need it. We are also able to take care not to damage our immediate working environment. I can guarantee, when purchasing new machinery - Hitachi will be the first port of call for any future acquisitions of machinery.”

THE QUARRYING VETERANS

Hillview Quarries is an independently owned and operated quarry located in Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula of Victoria. This business has recently taken delivery of a new Hitachi ZX370-5 wheel loader, after the series was first launched in September 2015 on the Sunshine coast in Queensland.

Acquiring the new dash 5 was a vital move in order for the Quarry to remain progressive with modern technology. According to Quarry Manager Daniel Moait, “We load everything with the wheel loader now, it is a part of our operation. Equipped with a 15.68 litre six-cylinder water-cooled turbo engine that enables a powerful digging performance, impressive travel speeds and a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 10%. “Our operators have found it easier to manoeuvre than previous models, it has a new clutch cut-off system to control the timing of the clutch for smooth operation when loading, regardless of the terrain,” said Paul.

Comfort and safety have been enhanced by the spacious cab, air conditioning and sound insulation, and greater visibility due to the pillar-less windshield and large sun visor. The new ZW370-5 Wheel Loader is also easy to maintain to ensure maximum availability, with easily accessible greasing points, oil levels and fuel filters.

Equipped with a 6.2m3 bucket capacity, it will load more than 2,000 tonnes of materials per day, working from 6am to 4.30pm, five days a week. Approximately 80% of the materials are delivered to customers working on road and other general construction sites within a 60kM radius of the site.

“My personal opinion is that if it’s Hitachi, it will look after itself. The engineering is so good, especially in comparison to other brands, with regard to the reliability and build quality,” said Paul.

“The reliability of these machines in quarry applications is very important, the loader was a little unknown however when we were able to trial the loader onsite for the week, the feedback from our operators agreed it outperformed its competitors. Vince Cubito, Director of Urban Earthmoving said “Starting out in 2007 with my first second hand 3 tonne combo, I worked towards looking for and maintaining a stable client base and just concentrating on superior service. Wanting to give them more, I moved to dry hiring excavators to be able to start adding demolition to my services but still without any other employees for the first 3 years of business. Once I had enough money, I bought my first second hand 135-1 (which I still have and is still out working with nearly 10,000hrs) to help me demolish and bulk excavate.”

Urban now hold a portfolio of four new excavators along with their existing fleet of the ZX50U-3, ZX135US-1, ZX225US-3, ZX330LC-3 and ZX470LCH-3 of Hitachi machines and assures that number will continue to grow, ‘the smoothness and speed of the equipment, especially our 225 which is my favourite. It’s a combination of things but the stand out benefit would have to be the fuel economy and resale value,’ he said.

Vince relies heavily on the quality of Hitachi machines to get the job done, “Our Hitachi machines do a variety of work from general works with plumbers and concreters to our larger excavators running a variety of attachments such as 50,000 pound Auger drives drilling 15meters deep as well as Rock Breakers, Hydraulic grabs etc. The huge flow rates these machines offer work very well with our attachments,” he said.

Striving to meet customer satisfaction and go the extra mile, Vince comments ‘the machines are very reliable and reputable and I think customers know that also. Our gear never stops throughout the year so it’s great to be able to run them trouble free for so long.’

“We are working within a number of high rise developments in the Brisbane area as well as new sub divisions, shopping centres and infrastructure works.”
