Better Skips is a recycling business operating predominantly in the Yarra Valley and Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs. The family owned business has over thirty years experience in the recycling and earthmoving industries with the established skip business servicing both the domestic and commercial construction market. The business prides itself on extensive industry experience and the ability to deliver efficient service.

The purchase of a new Hitachi ZX30U-3 mini excavator with integrated cabin has been a versatile addition to the team at Better Skips.

According to second generation business owner Chris Millburn, “The ZX30U-3 is a quality machine. It’s very easy to drive and the zero tail swing gives us great accessibility when manoeuvring in tight spots,” he said. These features combined with the machine’s long reach have proven a perfect solution at Better Skips when sorting and transporting scrap between recycling bins.

"After looking at other machines in the market, we found that the Hitachi ZX30U-3 was more suitable for our requirements."

During the recycling process, both a skeletal bucket and log grab are being utilised to suit a variety of applications across worksites. Engineered and manufactured by Jaws, these attachments are playing a key role when combined with the ZX30U-3.

“Once we have picked out rubbish from the bins, the skeletal bucket sieves out dirt and sand helping to separate materialsuch as bricks and concrete,” said Chris. “This is supported by the log grab designed for picking through the rubbish and distributing recyclable items into specific bin categories. After the rubbish is sorted, the remaining non-recyclable material is then relocated to landfill for disposal.”

“One day we will be sorting through rubbish and the next day we are digging drains.” he said. “We are really impressed with the machine’s digging and pushing power as well as the great visibility of the worksite from the cab.”

Better Skips initially purchased the ZX30U-3 for the purpose of recycling. However, when speaking with Chris about the versatility of their projects, the machine has enabled the business to pursue other earthmoving applications when required.

Overall, the machine has helped the business perform more efficiently by reducing labour time during the recycling process. “After looking at other machines in the market, we found that the Hitachi ZX30U-3 was more suitable for our requirements,” indicated Chris. “Robert Zadel at Hitachi proved very helpful in providing us with much better service options plus regular updates on product information.”
