AHS Controller Coordinator – Autonomous Haulage Project

What influences led you to your current role at Hitachi?

I started my career in mining as a heavy vehicle production operator with Meandu Mine. This was a complete leap of faith for a new experience and career direction. When I saw the role for AHS Controller advertised with Hitachi, I was at a point of wanting to further my career. I had been in discussion with various experienced miners to gauge their thoughts on the future in mining and where I could grow professionally and personally. This was AHS, so I took the leap and here I am today.

How did you find the transition to becoming an AHS Controller?

I would not have been able to achieve all I have without the support and encouragement from the management at Hitachi. Of course this was also achieved by hard work and dedication in broadening my knowledge and professional development. I always strive to do things that are going to better myself. I consider what might be beneficial for me in the future, whether it be of personal or professional benefit.

What do you do as an AHS Controller?

I work at the PoC (Proof of Concept) site, assisting in the research and development of Hitachi’s first Autonomous Haulage System. As well as being a part of the continuous improvement team for research and development, I manage our team to complete day to day operations, testing schedules and communicate with engineers to ensure requirements are met. This includes monitoring events, integrating key industry software and utilising equipment assets to optimise autonomous production, while keeping safety as my highest priority for our team.

What do you like most about your role?

AHS is an ever changing and growing product. You need to always be learning and on top of your game to succeed and be a part of the research and development. With this in mind, it challenges you in a way that makes you always look for ways to improve the system, which in return continuously improves your own growth too.

Do you find your career fulfilling?

Seeing the changes which you have suggested or helped develop is very rewarding. I’m developing my knowledge with Training and Assessment for AHS, also learning to be a Map Builder for Hitachi AHS. Looking into my future, I am very excited. My advice to people considering a career in this field is to show you are interested and willing to work hard. Make your interest known for future opportunities and dedicate yourself to proving your capability.
