GELLIE’S EARTHMOVING

Ned Gellie had a passion for earthmoving from a very young age playing in the sand pit. While completing his diesel mechanic apprenticeship, Ned gained employment on weekends with local earthmovers, and later worked all over Australia on some of the biggest projects at that time such as the Thomson Dam & Alcoa to gain experience.

In 1983 Ned & Wendy Gellie purchased their first piece of equipment, a Fiat Allis Bulldozer, and then a HITACHI EX200-1 Excavator. The relationship started with Hitachi distributor; Blackwood Hodge who became Marubeni Construction and Mining Equipment and then Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia in 1999. This was the beginning of Gellie’s Earthmoving and the continued Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia Pty Ltd (HCA) relationship.

Gellie’s Earthmoving is a family owned & operated business.  In the early days Gellie’s main focus was on soil conservation & agriculture projects, also specialising in and supporting the construction and roads industry.  Throughout the years they have also been extensively involved in windfarm construction and work all over Victoria on national railway infrastructure & maintenance projects.

Gellie’s have a wide range of equipment including Bulldozers, Excavators, Tractor & Scoop, Front End Loaders, Grader, Dump Truck, Tip Trucks, Side Tippers & Low Loaders. Gellie’s also have Hi Rail equipment, one of the machines being a Hitachi ZX170-3 rubber tyred excavator.

Gellie's is a leader in infrastructure & maintenance works

Today, Ned Gellie runs the business with his son Jake, together they lead a team of 12 full-time employees with some having worked for Gellie’s Earthmoving for more than 15 years.

From the very beginning, Ned has had a unique fondness and appreciation for Hitachi built excavators. “Hitachi is the only brand of excavators that we have purchased since starting the business, this is mainly due to their performance and reliability,” he says.

“The day-to-day running costs, fuel efficiency, cab layout and operator comfort are second to none. Our team of operators would refuse to operate with any other brand.”

The recent addition of 3 new Hitachi excavators including the ZX290LC-5, ZX85USB-5 and ZX55U-5A has taken the total number of machines to seven in their orange fleet.

Gellie’s Earthmoving has been a Hitachi customer for the last 40 years and credits HCA on their quality products, readily available parts and service coupled with a highly specialised support team working around the clock.

Ned credits his working relationship with HCA’s Victorian Sales Representative Greg Priestley and the local HCA branch, ‘due to their extensive understanding of the industry as well as the needs of Gellie’s Earthmoving business.’

HCA will continue to support Gellie’s Earthmoving and their business operations with reliable, world-class performing machinery and wish them the best with their upcoming railway projects.

For Tristan, an apprenticeship was the opportunity to build practical skills, work with experienced technicians, and be part of an industry that keeps Australia moving.

As an apprentice with Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia, he’s learning what it really takes to work on heavy equipment - from hands-on servicing and maintenance through to problem solving in the workshop and out in the field.

Every day brings something different. New challenges. New lessons. New opportunities to improve.

Because becoming a qualified tradesperson is not just about turning spanners.
It is built through experience, consistency, and the willingness to keep learning.

Hear Tristan share his journey and what being part of the Orange Family means to him.

This is what development looks like:
Hands-on learning. Real responsibility. A future built to last.
